Some Preliminary Results

Our research team is now back in the US and has been pouring over the baseline surveys we conducted in Honduras. One of the most striking findings from our preliminary research is the high rate of acceptance for using human waste as fertilizer indicated by participants:

This technology is not widespread in Honduras and therefore there was some concern that reusing human waste as fertilizer in one's agricultural field or garden would be taboo, and thus possibly an impediment to successful implementation of the ecological sanitation technology. If people have no use for the waste, they may not be successful users. This finding is therefore encouraging.

We are looking forward to continuing to pour over the data we gathered over the past few weeks and follow these communities as they begin to use their latrines.

About This Project

Water Missions International

The project includes construction of 80 household latrines in two Honduran communities. In the pilot we are conducting baseline surveys with families on sanitation and hygiene practices, authoritative sources of knowledge, and what factors they consider important in their toilet. This will help development practitioners to understand the risks and success indicators for ecological models of sanitation.
