Community monitors praise toolkit

Its been only 1 month since initial training on the community marine monitoring toolkit and already many resource monitors are using it. Feedback from communities in Lelepa, Saama, Nguna and other villages is that the toolkit is easy to use and they are enjoying monitoring: "We have already been using the toolkit and it is going well".

The next steps will be to compare the community marine data to our scientific data, to assess how reef condition and fish catches are related. The information will also inform conversations with communities about the health of their reefs and their local management. With support from Experiment backers, we will be able to conduct important analysis of the fish catch data with the ecological data, and provide resources for monitoring and management by local communities aiming for sustainable fisheries.

About This Project

C2O coasts, climate, oceans

Coral reefs support marine animals, including fish & shellfish that Pacific communities use for food. We are working with communities to collect data on reef condition, fish populations and fish catches. The data will help us understand reef changes from recent cyclone, predation and bleaching damage, and develop local monitoring tools that can inform local actions to improve reef health and promote sustainable fishing so reefs continue to provide food for communities.
