Join us in this joyful story: The Biciola is rolling!

Biciola: A tale of hope from Venezuela

December 2023 remains vivid in our memory, that day we won the prestigious IDEAS contest in Venezuela. The tension mounted as we waited for the results, and when they announced Biciola, as the grand prize winner in social impact, our hearts nearly burst. Those countless late nights had led to this moment!

Even with Venezuela's challenging political landscape, we dove straight into the real work. Thanks to the prize money and Experiment platform's backing, our sketches began transforming into tangible reality.

Testing the first prototype

June 2024 marked our first major milestone; we went to the beach in Zulia for our first real test. We'll never forget watching our Biciola machine rumble to life, combing through the sand for those tiny pieces of plastic, and it worked! To our delight, Biciola proved to be a success, demonstrating its effectiveness in separating and extracting these tiny pollutants.

Biciola team and local collaborators

Our university buddies helped us analyse everything we collected, and by September we were sharing our findings at a science conference with local students. The academic community's response fuelled our drive to push further.

But technical success was just the beginning. The real breakthrough came through community engagement. In October, the public library buzzed with excitement during our educational outreach events. Seeing locals pack the room, eager to learn about plastic pollution and its solutions, showed us we were on the right path.

Festival Corazón Verde

We've recently expanded our reach to include the next generation. Working with students with disabilities at a local school has been incredibly rewarding. Their passionate response to environmental conservation reminds us why we started this journey.

Biciola community

Looking back, it's wild to see how far we've come. This started as just an idea to clean up microplastics, but it's grown into this amazing community movement. Every time we hit the beach with our machine, we're not just cleaning sand - we're building the future we want to see, one tiny piece of plastic at a time.

Beach cleanup

Our journey is far from over. With growing community support and proven results, we're more determined than ever to expand our impact. Biciola isn't just a machine anymore - it's become a symbol of how local innovation can address global challenges.

About This Project

Our team is developing a microplastic removal machine to filter and strain contaminated sand effectively. We call it Biciola, and we plan to build one machine and install it on a public beach in Venezuela. To test the bike, we will offer conservation talks to the community and encourage people to clean the beach through various incentives. These volunteers will provide us with valuable data. Biciola is a powerful tool for raising awareness among residents and bringing communities together.
