How do you translate GPS tracking data into insights about parental care?

Hi Cienna, thanks so much for supporting our project. We will use the GPS to track parents and understand how many foraging trips they make, how much time they spend at sea or at the nest, how long they leave the nest unattended and so on.. This would give us insights on the parental behaviour. Furthermore, GPS trackers will be coupled with accelerometers, therefore we will likely be able to identify a pattern of movements which overlaps with a feeding event. Thus, we will be able to understand whether chicks that get sick receive less food and less parental care. If you want further info, don't hesitate to ask :)

I'm really excited about all the things this project can teach us about how to improve the well-being of animals in the wild. My team and I wrote more about those benefits here: https://www.wildanimalinitiative.org/blog/frigatebird-funding
