Project Results

I'm very exited to share you the conclusion of the field guide book printing and presentation of the book, I successfully presented the book with a highly organised party in 21/Nov/2022 at Bosaso, Somalia.

Thank you for your support.

About This Project

During Somalia’s 30-year-long civil war, my country lost many of our marine scientists. Now, Somalia lacks basic field guides for cataloguing the diversity of marine life in Somali waters. This project will investigate: what is the known diversity of Somali waters? Understanding biodiversity in Somali waters improve fisheries management. This research will be conducted by field ID in fish markets in Somalia, mainly in Bosaso. The resulting data will be used to create the field guide book.

What is the context of this research?

Somalia’s location at the convergence of the Gulf of Aden to the north and the Indian Ocean to the east makes it a potential hotspot for marine biodiversity. Surveys conducted in the 1970s by FAO show an abundance of marine pelagic and demersal fishes such as Tuna, Sharks, Rays, Groupers, and Snappers. However, updated research on the diversity of fishes has been minimal during the last 30 years of civil war. Our understanding of Somalia’s marine biodiversity is outdated and insufficient. This lack of baseline knowledge makes it impossible to understand how global environmental change, including climate change, will impact Coastal marine resources. And unfortunately, the Somali region is predicted to face severe impacts from climate change as ocean waters warm

What is the significance of this project?

To understand the biodiversity of marine life in Somali waters, this research will produce a comprehensive fish ID guide book written in the Somali language. This fish guide book is designed to assist with the ID of Somali fishes for fishery data collectors, observers, inspectors, consumers, and fishery institutes in Somalia. It will provide a tool for undergraduate fisheries students to support their research, and serve as a reference for future research on biodiversity in Somalia. This G.B will give Somalis a better understanding of the distribution and an abundance of diversity of fish species found in Somali waters. Also it helps local communities to be aware of ensuring a sustainable fishery and its positive impacts to the fish stocks and conservation of marine coastal habitats.

What are the goals of the project?

The main goal of this research is to catalogue the diversity of fishes in Somali waters by answering the question, "How many species of fishes are known in coastal Somali waters near Bosaso?” Over the last two years, I`ve been conducting research on the diversity of fishes in Somali waters by recording the presence of marine species and identifying the local, commercial, and scientific names of the fishes. In addition, I took photographs of fishes brought from fish markets in Somalia, primarily in Bosaso, I used these references Fishbase.org, and "The Living Marine Resources of Somalia". After the publication of the G.B, I will hold a book presentation party and invite fisheries authorities, Universities, and fishing communities. I will distribute the book free of charge to libraries.

Budget

Please wait...

During the two years I have been doing this research, I did not receive any funds from government agencies, NGOs, or other donors. I have always strived for this research while I was a student and supported it myself.

This funding will help me to publish and present the book which is very important to the community and fisheries students as well as fisheries authorities. In the first batch, I want to publish 250 books. Each book costs $15 so the total cost of printing will be $3750. Also book presentation budget will need $1000.

Endorsed by

I am thrilled to endorse this project via Afica@ As a director of environmental management and resource management I applaud Abraham and his fish studies! He is motivated, educated and is helping the world, and his local environment with research and studies that will help for generations to come
I endorse the project as it will add to the explicit knowledge on fisheries in the larger western Indian Ocean and associated seas drawing examples from the waters of larger Somalia. I am conversant with the research work done.
I have been known Abdirahman for the last two years as he was working for his project on fish identification guide book. This is the first of its kind on fish identification guide in Somali language. I believe the book will help Somali student whore are studying marine science faculties. Abdirahman was team leader for project Kalluun student who were collecting data on catch and efdort on Bosaso fish land site. I endorse Abdirahman’s research and wish him all the success.

Project Timeline

The publication and presentation of this research has often been delayed due to lack of funding but now I am optimistic that I will succeed in receiving funding from Crowdfunding, so I hope the publishing and presentation of this study will happen in July and August 2022.

Since this study contains a lot of knowledge about fishes I hope to present it in two coastal cities in Somalia, I also bring you this research book to see the fruits of your funding.

Team Bio

Abdirahman Abdi is a graduate student of Marine Science and Fisheries and he has 3 years of experience in marine fishes identification. Dr. Sarah Glaser is the Director of the Secure Fisheries Program at One Earth Future foundation. She has worked in the Somali fisheries sector since 2014 and she is an expert in marine ecology with a focus on fisheries in Africa and she has extensive experience of marine fisheries, Abdirahman Abdi and Sarah met about 2 years ago.

Abdirahman Abdi Ali

Hi my name is Abdirahman Abdi I am a graduate student of Marine Science and Fisheries at East Africa University in Bosaso, Somalia, On the other hand, I have experience in Marine organisms identification from working as an supervisor of Project Kalluun fish data collection team under Secure Fisheries Organization during my undergraduate career and up to now, While I was working on fish data collection I started studying the diversity of marine fishes in Somalia waters. Currently, as a graduate student, this opportunity will propel me to fulfilling my career goal of being marine biologist. My interest in the study of fishes began as a teenager when I first watched ocean documentaries.

Sarah Glaser

Sarah Glaser is a marine ecologist and fisheries biologist. She recently moved to the World Wildlife Fund where she is Senior Director of Oceans Futures. Her previous work at One Earth Future foundation connected her to Abdirahman while she was working on fisheries policy and conservation in the Somali region.
