Absolutely!! Good point! We are certainly aware of longer term changes in climate throughout the history of the earth. What is concerning from our perspective is that climate has been changing in the last 40 years at our site (we have records) and is projected to change further, and quickly. Deforestation in the lowlands has heated up the air over those regions which pushes up the clouds so when the clouds reach our study site in the mountains those clouds are higher in elevation. This means that the clouds are not as much in contact with the forest as they once were and that is bad news for epiphytes. These are regional changes in land use affecting the climate of the TMCF...there are of course larger scale climate issues at play as well. Costa Rica is a tiny country with an ocean on either side so any increase in ocean temperatures will influence cloud formation and cloud base heights and will influence precipitation as well. Thanks for your support and for bringing up this important point! Sybil

Hi Oscar. Thanks for your support! Your question is a great one. I have been on a number of ziplines myself and generally I don't think the tours do much damage to the epiphytes because people are often "zipping" in open spaces between trees or over valleys. I have seen many epiphytes on the trees where platforms are located but generally people are standing on the platforms rather than on tree branches.

hey guys, this is an awesome project. This will seem like a random question, but I know that zip-line tours (among other tourism activities) are really popular in parts of costa rica. Does the presence of tourism threaten epiphytes at all, or is it's effect pretty negligible?
