About This Project
Ocean acidification (OA) is the phenomenon of decreasing sea surface pH as a result of human-produced CO2 dissolved in the ocean. San Diego high school students will collect and analyze water samples from local tide pools with the OA Lab Kits. Their research will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of OA off the southern California coast. This will help to save the ocean, and the world!

How can we get students excited about ocean acidification research? Get them involved! The Andersson Research Group will partner with local high school classrooms. We will distribute ocean acidification Lab Kits, train teachers and students, guide the collection and analysis of samples, and develop ocean acidification related curriculum materials. This pilot project will inform future partnerships between researchers and students!
What is the significance of this project?
Ocean acidification is the phenomenon of decreasing sea surface pH as a result of human-produced CO2 dissolved in the ocean. San Diego high school students will collect and analyze water samples from the near-shore environment with the ocean acidification Lab Kits. Their research will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of ocean acidification off the southern California coast.
Ocean acidification affects everyone, but many people don't know what it is! About 26% of CO2 from human activities dissolves into the ocean. This has caused an average 30% increase in sea surface acidity since the industrial revolution. Ocean acidification will change ocean ecosystems and impact human health. Increasing public awareness of ocean acidification and empowering students to do research are crucial to curbing this global problem.
What are the goals of the project?
Funds will cover the costs of materials and distribution of the ocean acidification lab kits, transportation for participating classrooms getting to and from training workshops, tide pools, and the ocean acidification lab. Funds will also contribute to the salary of the Education Coordinator who will train participants, visit classrooms, develop curriculum materials, and guide the collection and analysis of data.
Budget
Funds will be used to purchase ocean acidification lab kit material, pay for participant transportation, and the salary for an education coordinator.

I am an environmental educator with a Masters in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. For the past year I have been collaborating with ocean acidification researchers at Scripps to develop effective educational outreach materials and programs for local teachers and students. I combine my teaching experience and knowledge of current marine conservation research to create educational experiences that engage students in real science. I aim to bridge the gap between research and public education in order to increase students' awareness of and involvement in marine conservation.
