If you have to crowd fund to do your graduate work (i.e., even your advisor can't get adequate grant funding), this is a sign that you do not want to go into academia.

Ha, true enough Karen, and thank you for being one of the backers by the way! There are several factors contributing to this crowd funding campaign-- one is that I enjoy making science a community effort. I think I might have been able to wrangle $3K toward the genetic data, but I like it when science is more broadly supported. Also, plant conservation biology is woefully underfunded-- plants just aren't as charismatic as Pandas, for example. So I wanted to raise awareness of this. Finaly, while a huge (and I do mean huge) data set in genomics is now available for low cost, it's still about $7K or more, and for a grad student, that's a big hurdle. Especially considering that I'm also doing a molecular phylogeny. Anyway, I deeply appreciate your support!

Just a little shove back at the anti-science oligarchs and the carbon-spewing horse they rode in on.

As a conservation geneticist with a special place in my heart for cacti, I'm happy to lend support to this project. The information from this research will lend valuable information to the growing body of conservation studies using next generation sequencing techniques and bioinformatic analyses. I hope you are able to reach your goal, I'm excited to see what you find!

I hope that the work I do here can be generalized across a wide variety of threatened plants!

What does that bumper sticker say? "Some day the schools will have all the money they need and the Air Force will have a bake sale to buy a new bomber."

Interestingly, part of the range of the species I am assessing is bombed repeatedly by the Mexican Navy. :-)

All too rarely is it given to any of us as scholars to embrace, as our life's work, that place where our own deep gladness meets the world's deep need. This is such a project. It deserves to be supported.

Thanks-- I'll get to do it, I bet. And this crowd funding effort will help.
