Summary
Using non-invasive photo-ID methods to identify manta rays, we will carry out boat surveys using both free diving and SCUBA diving to visit known aggregation sites as well as conduct exploratory searches for new feeding and cleaning sites.
Pre Analysis Plan
This study aims to expand on our current understanding of this understudied population of manta rays and build on the regional database of manta sightings and recorded individuals. ID-data will be collated and analysed alongside historical data to start the long-term process of examining population size, dynamics and seasonality. Identifying new aggregation sites will enable the team to expand the survey range, allowing us to plan for continued research and further efforts to see the focus study area become a legally declared and effectively managed Marine Protected Area.
