NuBeginnings for NuLeaf
Hello All,
Many thanks to everyone that has supported NuLeaf to this point! We know it’s been awhile since you’ve heard from us, and we thank you for your patience. We’re happy to say that we have plenty to report! NuLeaf began as an informal research group of budding biotech students, and with your support, we’ve evolved into so much more.
We’ve begun designing prototypes, talked to experts in our field, and expanded our technology to include not only PMFCs but also engineered ecosystems called artificial wetlands. We realized that our biomimetic approach was unique and industry competitive. We were accepted to a (currently ongoing) startup accelerator program in Ireland, have received $100,000 in initial funding, and evolved into a bioinspired startup.
To this end, our philosophy has also amplified. By learning from nature, we can show that economic growth, technological innovation, and sustainability are better together. The current model of wastewater treatment plants consists of unattractive, expensive, and unnatural wastewater methodologies. Our vision is to create low-cost, self-powered, and ecologically integrated gardens that function even more efficiently than their predecessors. This can provide people all over the world with locally generated clean water and energy.
We’ve built several PMFC units and are testing them to optimize their productivity in various settings globally, particularly agriculture and off-grid living. An artificial wetland is an engineered ecosystem that uses wetland plant, animal, and microbe relationships to clean water. Together, these technologies, amplified with our symbiotic approach, can allow for a more complete breakdown of waste while reclaiming resources onsite in a natural setting.
We cherish and are humbled by the opportunities you’ve given NuLeaf. Our passion from the start was to solve some of world’s most pressing problems related to climate change and in doing so change mankind’s relationship between nature and technology. It is an indescribable feeling to see our efforts transform from student-centric experiments into real-world applications.
The best part is that it is only the beginning of an amazing journey. Our experiment.com campaign and your contributions were an integral part in gaining the confidence to step into the startup world. With nature on our side, we hope to make you proud and contribute to a future for a healthy home and planet for creatures of all types for generations to come.
