'Mind Your Line' - helping tackle the problem

The Mind Your Line effort (originally Clear Your Gear) was established in 2014 by many Sanibel-Captiva conservation organizations in response to continued environmental problems and wildlife injuries caused by monofilament line and other fishing gear. The goal is to reduce the amount of discarded fishing gear in the environment by raising awareness and promoting appropriate disposal of fishing gear and line. More information is available on the website, including videos on how to unhook birds, appropriate reporting of monofilament line found in the environment, a map of recycling bin locations on Sanibel Island, and other ways to volunteer and get involved.

There's even a musical number!

Improper disposal of fishing gear is a global issue, and awareness surrounding this issue has increased in the past decade. There are many programs nationwide to promote appropriate disposal of gear, and many maps to help find recycling bins. The following are some other sources of information regarding monofilament line recycing.

About This Project

Fishing line entanglement injuries are a common problem affecting over 200 different wildlife species globally. Often, animals struggle to free themselves for extended periods of time before they are extracted or brought to a veterinary hospital. This study will analyze whether blood lactate levels can be used as a biomarker for severity of injury or as a prognostic indicator for successful rehabilitation and release of entangled birds back into the wild in Southwest Florida.
