Launch of the Turtle Spotter Challenge

Since receiving the pledged funds from Experiment.com and additional funds from SPAW-RAC, we have had our hands full getting the project underway and we have many updates to report. I'll start off with a summary of some of the key milestones:

  • We engaged Sh'raiya Enterprises in September 2022 to help us develop the awareness campaign

  • The campaign for the project now dubbed the "Turtle Spotter Challenge" was launched online right after T&T carnival, on 22nd February 2023, utilizing posts on Facebook and Instagram as well as Google Ads

  • We made several mechanisms available to receive turtle reports - our project webpage provides all the information about the project and how to participate

  • In early April 2023 we received our turtle costume and made our first appearance at a local marina where we engaged with people waiting to make their way "DDI" or "Down D Islands" - the Bocas Islands offshore northwest Trinidad

  • We put together a team of volunteers to assist with implementing a survey of key stakeholders

  • We began distributing posters and flyers at key locations around T&T

About This Project

All 5 sea turtle species in T&T are considered globally Threatened by the IUCN. Effective conservation of sea turtles requires understanding habitat use, identifying threats and monitoring population change. By engaging citizen scientists through the smartphone app TURT, recreational dive logs submitted via Google forms, and surveys of key stakeholders, we can gather photos of turtles and spatial data cost-effectively to inform the conservation of these species.
