Thanks to You, we got more funding!

Hi All,

We are sending this note to first thank everyone a second time for their generous contribution to our project and to give you an update on our project.

Thanks to you, this summer has been chock full of farm visits and monitoring trips. We have put traps on over 40 farms throughout Vermont and have identified leek moth in 10 counties so far this year. While this information may seem trivial, it is this type of foundational data that provides the ground work for larger scale projects. Without knowing the extent of the invasion in both geographic spread and severity, we would be unable to develop appropriate control measures. Furthermore, in an age of dwindling funding resources, it is important to have good data to get "good money".

That said, we would also like to let you know that your contribution has led to some "good money". Thanks to the preliminary data supplied by our monitoring efforts (and your funding!), we have recently received funding from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture to continue our monitoring efforts next year and to test several control strategies for this new invasive pest! This is all thanks to the generous support of people like you!!

Thank you!

We'll keep you posted on our progress.

Sincerely,

Vic & Scott

ps. those of you that provided funding following Vic's offering of Haiku's and Music Videos, do not worry they are all in the works. It may be in your email box at the end of the summer but it will be there!

Congrats on the additional funding! I supported before the bribery of haikus and music videos was offered. Can I still get some?

About This Project

The leek moth (LM) is a recent invasive pest occurring within Northern NY and Vermont. A pest of onions and garlic, LM is a serious threat to diversified farms in the region. Recent ecological simulations predict that “the continued range expansion of LM…appears to be inevitable”. Our monitoring program will monitor the LM’s known and potential distribution. The objective of the monitoring program will be to describe the current distribution of the pest and to assess its local phenology.
