Thank You!

Dear Funders,

With the new growing season in sight, we wanted to formally thank everyone for their generosity and provide a brief update on the project and the subsequent funding that has resulted from your help.

Thanks to your help and our participating farmers, we were able to set out over 40 traps and monitor 11 out of 15 Vermont counties last season.  It was a lot of driving and farm visits that simply would not have been possible without the funding from YOU!!!

In addition, we used the monitoring data to help farmers accurately deploy control tactics throughout the season AND the preliminary data generated from our monitoring has resulted in two successful grant applications leading to over $40,000 worth of research funding. In the upcoming season, we will use this funding to test innovative organic techniques for leek moth control along with a varietal trial to see which onion cultivars exhibit tolerance to leek moth.

All that said, we cannot thank you all enough.

Attached is the research brief that we sent out to our participating growers.

Thank you!

Vic and Scott

About This Project

The leek moth (LM) is a recent invasive pest occurring within Northern NY and Vermont. A pest of onions and garlic, LM is a serious threat to diversified farms in the region. Recent ecological simulations predict that “the continued range expansion of LM…appears to be inevitable”. Our monitoring program will monitor the LM’s known and potential distribution. The objective of the monitoring program will be to describe the current distribution of the pest and to assess its local phenology.
