Progress Update

The first batch of DNA libraries was sent to a sequencing facility (Macrogen) for quality control in December 2024. However, they did not pass the QC, likely due to factors such as degradation of DNA by DNases. To address these issues, we autoclaved the tubes before sample pooling and sent the replacement pools on ice for another quality check in early February 2025. We are currently awaiting feedback from the sequencing facility.

On February 4, 2025, I presented this work at the Department of Biological Sciences, Pwani University, where I received positive feedback, including recognition for securing the grant from this platform and being regarded as a role model for aspiring young scientists. See the slides attached.

About This Project

Coral symbionts provide the host with nutrition and adaptive capacity to environmental changes. This potential is hardly integrated in restoration plans. This project will characterize microbes from corals in artificial and natural reefs to identify taxa associated with responses to stressors for use as indicators in monitoring. Taxa associated with promoting health and resilience will be recommended for use as environmental probiotics or in microbiome engineering to improve coral survival.
