Thanks for the donations! We just put them to use and tagged some sharks!

Hey everyone,

Last Tuesday, in accordance with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, we headed out to Edisto, South Carolina. Our goal was to deploy the acoustic tags that your donations funded. This will help answer questions about space use of the bonnethead shark.

Each shark had a small incision made on its ventral surface. The tags were then placed in the animal's body cavity and the small incision was sutured. In the picture below, you will see the small incision, in which the tag was already inserted, being sutured. Although this picture might look scary, the animal was only out of the water for a couple minutes.

Thanks for reading this quick update. I will post a video of our tagging experience very soon!

About This Project

We will acoustically tag bonnethead sharks in a South Carolina estuary to investigate space use and determine if the introduction of offshore wind farms could cause environmental displacement from this area. Our work will ensure that the sustainable energy from offshore wind farms will not adversely affect the marine environment. The bonnethead is being used as a model species and the findings will be used for protecting all coastal sharks, the marine ecosystem, and provided ecosystem services.

Blast off!
