Progress!!!

β€Š

First, thank you again to all of you amazing donors, supporters, and just incredible people! We could not have done this without you. We successfully ordered our eye tracking equipment and it works better than we could have hoped for. After many days of testing and setting things up in the lab we were able to bring our set up to the zoo. Through the use of enrichment items, cartoon bugs with sounds (home-made videos of course), and lots more, we are able to get the attention of the gorillas for short bursts of time. Finally, after a few days of no attention and constant problem solving, we have had a success! Today we got our very first gaze track of the gorillas!!! We are so excited and can't wait to keep gathering more data. More updates to come! Thank you again so much to all of our supporters. We really could not have made it this far without all of your help. The picture above is a mock version of the set up we are using at the zoo, for reference purposes.

About This Project

An animals' "umwelt" is the way in which they perceive the world. With the use of eye-tracking technology, we will present the gorillas with different images to explore the ways in which gorillas see and respond to their world. The overarching goal of this project is to determine visual processing patterns in the gorillas at the Buffalo Zoo and expand our understanding of how they see their world. In other words, this study aims to further our current understanding of the β€œgorilla umwelt.”
