Army Ant Invasion

One night we were all working on the entomology collection when a stream of army ants swept through the main building at TREES. I had seen army ants in action during one of my previous trips to Belize, but only in the forest where they crossed a trail. This time the army was going right through the area we were using to prepare the specimens. We frantically began moving our specimens as the ant column worked it's way through the building. They very efficiently foraged for anything remotely edible...even better than a Dyson, Hoover, or Orick in cleaning up the floor, walls, and shelves! And, we were in bare feet as we rushed around moving our pinned insects...Justin can attest to their biting prowess.

Here is a short video of the column.

About This Project

This project intends to create a major entomology collection housed in Belize and to conduct bat inventories while in Belize. The Maya Mountains of Belize are a biological hotspot located in one of the fastest growing regions of our planet (Central America). Yet, even with this growth, Belize has chosen to protect over one-quarter of their country as parks and preserves! Biological inventories help to better understand these protected areas.
