Preliminary results

This graph shows some of our preliminary experiments. Each red dot is one "miniature society" that has social media. The height of the dot shows "Net Punishment", which is how much the people in the society turned against and opposed the non-profit organizations. The horizontal position of the dot is "Net Reward", which shows how much the society wanted to help the organizations.

The blue honeycomb shows what we expect a non-social media world to do (simulated from real data in the experiment). The dark blue areas are where we expect the non-social worlds to usually be. You can see that the red dots are much more spread out from top to bottom (relative to the blue grid). This indicates that the social media worlds tended to have higher but also more unpredictable degrees of outrage.

About This Project

Every day we see people on Facebook, Twitter, and news comments expressing outrage about organizations and leaders. But how are these expressions actually influencing the behavior of other members of the public? We are running experiments to test whether (and when) social media can cause a group's behavior to be more extreme and erratic.
