We have some sequences!

I have been doing many PCR's to gather as much data as I can before I leave Brazil. I have about 3 weeks left here before I go to a conference in Brazil to share some preliminary results. So far I have gotten some mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences back for ~600 bp for ~20-30 samples from Brazil which is a great number of samples to have for population genetic studies. I have included a photo of a mtDNA sequence so you can see what they look like and what I am using for my analyses. I am still working on my microsatellites and hope to have that data in the next two weeks!

These are what the mtDNA sequences look like that I am going through to discover nucleotide differences between individuals. For example, some individuals may have a T whereas others have a C and that is what I am looking for and making note of for my results.

About This Project

The Critically Endangered Largetooth Sawfish is one of the most threatened of all marine fishes. They have historically been, and still are, exploited for their toothy saw. After global declines, Brazil is likely the last place this species is found in the Atlantic. This project aims to use DNA from old saws to assess Largetooth Sawfish genetic health in Brazil which is a critical step to giving this species a fighting chance against extinction.
