Scientists aren't always just scientists....

They can be firefighters!

I am proud to finally celebrate a goal that you have helped me achieve. I set this goal six months ago as I left the prescribed fires of the southeast USA to set foot in the fiery fynbos of South Africa.

I wanted to join the Volunteer Wildfire Services.

These amazing folks are volunteers who rely entirely on donations to fund their efforts to protect communities from wildfires. Their generosity and patience in training us 2015 New Recruits all through the winter months has finally paid off!

On December 5th, we formally became Yellow shirts (albeit bright yellow shirts...but that will soon be rectified...):

I look forward to this summer wildfire season as a member of the Jonkershoek Station team!

First standby crew of the season!

About This Project

Tiny, cryptic moss frogs inhabit remote mountain seepages in South Africa's fiery fynbos biome. Non-native, invasive pine trees threaten this biodiversity hotspot, but restoration efforts are underway. In this project we will compare methods and outcomes of mountain fynbos restoration projects to answer the question: How do invasive pine removal strategies affect moss frog populations and effectively restore fynbos?

Blast off!
