Back to Canada

Hi everyone! This update is one day late, as my first flight left early in the morning, and access to wifi was very spotty along my subsequent journey. This note is just to mark that I have left Peru. This is the final of my so-called project "Milestones". It was hard work, involving a lot of heat, humidity, rivers of mud, and mosquitoes (and, on at least one occasion, wading through blackwater creeks up to my neck, trying to be mindful of the stingrays and black caimans), but the project got done. Now (when I have time) begins the combing through mountains of data. If (hopefully when, but these things are unpredictable sometimes) something interesting ends up coming from this project, I will be sure to let you all know. That could be a month from now, or it could be a year from now. Nevertheless, I will let you all know.

Regards,

Nick

Me, in the absolutely massive, totally-not-tiny-at-all departure lounge at Padre Aldamiz International Airport in Puerto Maldonado, Peru. Note how much more rough around the edges I look compared to in the photo at the Vancouver airport from when I left.

About This Project

Environmental parameters influence many aspects of an organism's life. However, animals that spend large portions of their lives underground remain understudied. We still don't know much about what the Amazon's iconic tarantulas get up to in the wild when no one is watching. I will monitor one of the largest tarantulas on the planet, the steely blue birdeater (Pamphobeteus antinous), and look at how temperature, humidity, and air pressure affect their movement.

Blast off!
