In the jungle, the mighty jungle...

Hi everybody,

Computer battery is precious here at the field station, as our electricity has only been working intermittently. Somehow, though, wifi still works, for most of the day, even when the wall electrical outlets don't. Go figure. Anyways, because of this, this is just a brief update. I'm alive, despite the Amazon rainforest's repeated attempts to kill me. For instance, I'm averaging having to remove one potentially deadly wandering spider (Phoneutria fera) from living quarters per day. However, the project goes ahead as planned, albeit with bumps.

Cheers,

Nick

About This Project

Environmental parameters influence many aspects of an organism's life. However, animals that spend large portions of their lives underground remain understudied. We still don't know much about what the Amazon's iconic tarantulas get up to in the wild when no one is watching. I will monitor one of the largest tarantulas on the planet, the steely blue birdeater (Pamphobeteus antinous), and look at how temperature, humidity, and air pressure affect their movement.

Blast off!
