I'm leaving, on a jet plane...

Today's "Milestone" is on time! It definitely was a mad dash at the last minute there to get everything ready (for reasons outside of my control). Not ideal on these sorts of expeditions, but what can ya do? They made me dump out about two thirds of my silica gel (that will keep my equipment dry in the Amazon's high humidity), and my only easily-accessible phone charging cable decided that today was the day that it would die (luckily they sell those at the airport), but other than that, everything at the airport has gone well. Peru, here I come! Thanks again to all of my backers who made this possible.

Cheers,

Nick

Greetings from Vancouver International Airport. In this photo, I'm waiting for the flight for the first leg of my journey down to Puerto Maldonado, Peru. If I look sleep-deprived, that's because I am!

Have a great trip Nick! Know you will smash it out of the park (or in this case rain forest)

About This Project

Environmental parameters influence many aspects of an organism's life. However, animals that spend large portions of their lives underground remain understudied. We still don't know much about what the Amazon's iconic tarantulas get up to in the wild when no one is watching. I will monitor one of the largest tarantulas on the planet, the steely blue birdeater (Pamphobeteus antinous), and look at how temperature, humidity, and air pressure affect their movement.

Blast off!
