Introducing Annemieke Milks

As a kid my parents were constantly taking us to archaeological sites and museums in the USA and in Europe. I was always grabbed by imagining what life was like for people in the past, and especially for prehistoric people. Because I was also a violinist, I didn't have much time to study archaeology seriously - though I did dream of going to the Crow Canyon field school. During my undergrad years at the University of Michigan, while studying music I took a great course in Mesoamerican archaeology and it sewed a seed for later years. After an injury meant I needed to give up my career as a violinist, I decided to pursue that dream of archaeological research. It has grown into a passion for human evolution and in particular early hunting strategies and the use of wood as a raw material.

About This Project

This interdisciplinary project looks at how the earliest weapons were used. Plain wooden spears have been found in Europe, with the earliest example dating to around 400,000 years. Though found alongside butchered animals it's unclear if they were designed as thrusted or thrown hunting spears or for self-defence against big cats. I will test replicas in a ballistics lab to evaluate effectiveness as hand-thrown hunting spears, helping understand key questions about behaviors in human evolution.
