Experiment Day!

Hi backers! A quick lab note to say that it's experiment day here at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. The beautiful spear replicas are ready to be prepared for the air cannon this morning - we just need to add some mass to replicate the full mass of wooden spears, and foam discs to create the seal for the barrel. I'm joined by my amazing colleague, engineer Dr. Debra Carr, with whom I've been working on archaeological weapon experiments since my masters research. Deb will be working the high speed camera today and generally helping me run the experiment. Two other engineers will also be helping us out with setting up and firing the air cannon, and we have a colleague, Richard Prior, joining us from the Royal Veterinary College too. I've really enjoyed the interdisciplinary aspect of this research, which has stretched me in many new ways, and I'm so grateful to everyone putting this project together, including you, the backers. Thanks again!

About This Project

This interdisciplinary project looks at how the earliest weapons were used. Plain wooden spears have been found in Europe, with the earliest example dating to around 400,000 years. Though found alongside butchered animals it's unclear if they were designed as thrusted or thrown hunting spears or for self-defence against big cats. I will test replicas in a ballistics lab to evaluate effectiveness as hand-thrown hunting spears, helping understand key questions about behaviors in human evolution.
