Sampling adventures!

I just finished sampling the last Largetooth Sawfish saw held in Dr. Patricia Charvet's collection. It took a few days to sample the 120 saws but I managed to get through them all with Patricia's help. These saws were all collected in Brazil and they all looked to be in great condition which hopefully means we can get some great DNA out of them! The sampling protocol is very simple so that anyone can do it but it does take a while to get the hang of it. All you need is a box cutter, tubes (or Ziploc bags), gloves, tweezers, paper towels, bleach, and water!

Annmarie, you did a great job in sampling all them very carefully. Congrats and let’s see what the DNA results will tell us!

About This Project

The Critically Endangered Largetooth Sawfish is one of the most threatened of all marine fishes. They have historically been, and still are, exploited for their toothy saw. After global declines, Brazil is likely the last place this species is found in the Atlantic. This project aims to use DNA from old saws to assess Largetooth Sawfish genetic health in Brazil which is a critical step to giving this species a fighting chance against extinction.
