My first ever conference presentation

Not pictured is the app 300 veterinarians sitting behind the photographer.

I gave my first ever conference presentation at the Zoo and Wildlife Health Conference 2019, a joint conference between some of the zoo and wildlife medicine associations of Europe, and it was a blast!

With arround 350 attendants, this was by far the biggest presentation I have ever given, and I was quite nervous. Luckily I had some amazing people around me (who are also backing the project - thank you!), and we managed to get my slideshow in order the evening before. Huge shout out to Nancy & Jeff for the invaluable help and feedback for this, I truely would not have survived this without your help!

The conference was amazing and I met so many incredible researchers and zoo/wildlife veterinarians, as well as vet students starting out. It was held at Kolmården Zoo at their conference venue and hotel, Villmarkshotellet, and this place is definitely worth a visit. Througout the whole week we were fed delicious food, and the service was fantastic. It made it possible for us to relax and enjoy every single day (after my presentation, I didnt relax much before that) and it was an excellent setting for making new friends and reconnecting with old ones!

I presented my veterinary Master's thesis project that is the foundation for this current project. My presentation was titled "Screening for lead in Scandinavian Brown Bears (Ursus arctos)" and I had 11 minutes to present the key findings and take home messages. I forgot so much of what I wanted to say but managed to stay exactly on time, so it worked out in the end.

I am very much looking forward to my next conference, and I have been told the next presentation will be much less stressful - I really hope that is true!

About This Project

Toxicants of human origin are a growing concern to conservation. Lead (Pb) is a toxicant that accumulates in the body over time. It has no biological function and can cause many negative health effects over time. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that there are no safe levels of lead in the body.

The brown bear is exposed to lead through scavenging. We will investigate the impact of lead on the health of wild brown bears and identify predictable blood changes (biomarkers) of toxicity.

Blast off!
