Why we love PacBio sequencing!

Our previous research and this project utilizes PacBio SMRT sequencing (http://www.pacb.com) and it's quite amazing! If you are interested in doing microbiome research yourself, please look into the differences between sequencing platforms - which are primarily PacBio and Illumina. I really enjoy using PacBio for the following reasons:

1. It enables us to have a greater accuracy in bacterial identification - we can go to species level.

2. It's much easier data to work with. To confidently identify all the species in my ticks, I am working with thousands of reads per sample instead of millions.

3. The statistical analyses are easier for those of us that aren't fluent in stats.

4. PacBio company rocks! We have always had great experience interacting with the employees.

About This Project

Researchers estimate that 60% of infection diseases are spread from animals to humans, often by arthropods. Although malaria infections are decreasing in Africa, there has been an increase in acute febrile illness (AFI). AFI includes rapid onset of fever and symptoms such as headache and chills. The South African Mnisi community, which shares 75% surrounded by wildlife reserves, has a high number of AFI cases. We plan to test the hypothesis that AFI in Mnisi is attributed to tick-borne pathogens
