Previously you said you sent the results of the first study to Ecology. Have you heard from them? NEPA requires baseline studies be done to determine cumulative impact but I don't see any indication they are doing any baseline studies. I have been working with NEPA since Nixon signed it in 1970 and I have never seen the violations of NEPA that are happening in this situation with the transport of fossil fuels through Washington. Looking forward to the results of your project. I'm doing a photo essay on coal transport by train in Colorado. Hope your research will be a great guide as well as supportive source of literature.

Hi Judith. This is a reasonable comment. As you know, I am not trying to do a long term monitoring study and so there is nothing we can do about the timing. That said, Bellingham does have some of its worst air quality days in the winter when winter stagnation events settle in between storm periods. I am pretty up on the local AQ and weather conditions and so I'll be doing my best to design a useful study. Dan

I am a little concerned about the limited time frame of this study; winter wet vs. Summer dry. What measures can you take to understand these differences?

I felt a little uneasy about this way of sending money would have preferred to send check. In bellieve in a thorough investigation into the carbon imprint of these projects and we need to know the truth. I really hope you get to do this!

Thank-you Professor Jaffe et al. for undertaking this important work. I was impressed with the careful design and data analysis of your first publication on the particulate emissions of the coal trains.

We are very concerned with disruptions to health, noise, traffic, functioning of daily life, as well as degrading the natural beauty of the county for dubious job promises and reinforcing of an outmoded and already discredited energy source.

I am very interest in your results. I'm a freelance journalist and photographer. I live in Castle Rock, CO, where coal train travel everyday. I'm currently working on a photo essay on the health effects of coal trains on the communities which they travel through.

Earl- We have some data from summer 2014 that we are analyzing now and should get published into a new paper by next June. The B'ham study will hopefully happen this winter and so a final report would be available about 6-8 months afterwards.

As part of my research on train impacts I looked at a FRA ROD where they identified impacts from vibration damage to house within 200 ft and air pollution impacts from NOX, CO, and SO2.

The previous study was excellent and I will use it to support the need for a programmatic EIS on fossil fuel transport through Washington and the surrounding states. How long will the new study take. E. Ivan White
