About This Project

Cognitive enrichment and physical activity promote brain plasticity, preventing the incidence of cognitive impairment.

We believe that early intervention, when the cognitive reserve and brain integrity are still largely preserved can enhance plasticity process and neurogenesis. The objective of the study is to examine the effect of computer assisted cognitive training to improve cognitive functions and prevent decline.

What is the context of this research?

The system we will use is different from the others: CogniFit, ACTIVE/ Brain Fitness Program/Brain Computer Interface (BCI) . Is called Rehacom and has been tested up now through many different studies several diseases. The aim of our study is to measure the changes on cognitive domains of healthy people using Rehacom.

The studies that have been done on the effects of cognitive based training for healthy people did not include this software (1)

What is the significance of this project?

Every person in every country in the world should have the opportunity
to live a long and healthy life. Promoting successful cognitive aging is
a topic of major importance to individuals.

The promotion of successful cognitive ageing involves the dual goals of
preventing loss of information processing capacity and cognitive
reserve, and enhancing brain capacity and cognitive reserve.

As one ages (from 50) cognitive abilities (memory, attention, executive
functions,visual-spatial abilities) decline.Experimental subjects will be
workers aged 50-60. We think that doing the training their cognitive functions will enhance.

What are the goals of the project?

The research will demonstrate if the computer assisted training (30 min/day 5 days a week for 3 months) can lead to improve cognitive functions and prevent decline. The experimental subjects will be workers not diagnosed with cognitive impaiments or any form of dementia. They will undergo a neuropsychological assessment of memory, attention, executive functions and visual-spatial abilitities, before starting and after 3 months training. We will evaluate how aspects of the neuropsychological assessment change after this 3 month training period.

Budget

The research will involve at least 4 people for 8 months.

The required tasks are:

looking for the experimental subjects (25 women/25 men) =10 HOURS

do the neuropsychological assessments=25 HOURS

tests verification=25 HOURS

create the database=12,5 HOURS

prepare the training for 1 month:15minx50=12,5 (3 months= 37,5 HOURS)

organize 1 assisted session for each participant=25 HOURS

control results every week for 3 months=12 HOURS

do the neuropsychological assessments after 3 months training=25 HOURS

tests verification=25 HOURS

data analysis= 10 HOURS

Follow-up:

do neuropsychological assessments= 25 HOURS

tests verification: = 25 HOURS

Additional Information

The overall benefit for society and the socio-economical implications of
this approach are relevant. The longer an individual remains cognitively efficient, the greater the chances she/he has to maintain satisfactory functional levels in daily living activities and reduce health care costs.
