Almost half way there!

Thanks again for all of the generous folks who donated thus far. We hope to have the T-shirt design up for everyone soon. We wanted to show a couple new photos. These were actually both taken from The Marine Mammal Center and outline some of the work that we are trying to do in Chile. The pictures below are of a Guadalupe fur seal, a species closely related to the South American fur seal. The Marine Mammal Center was able to use equipment such as an anesthesia machine and a satellite tag to help treat and monitor this seal.

These are the types of items we would like to purchase with your donations to help monitor the health of South American fur seals in Chile. Thanks to anyone assisting us with this!

The Guadalupe fur seal, named Sterling (above) has a satellite tag with antennae on her back to allow researchers to track her movements in the wild.

Researchers can also use anesthesia machines to help sedate fur seals (above) to get a better picture of their health and collect data much easier.

About This Project

The largest breeding colony for the South American fur seal in Chile is on remote Guafo Island in northern Patagonia. The population has declined 57% over the last 20 years.
Our previous investigations have shown that pup mortality may be increasing due to infectious disease. A new study looks to analyze how mother and pup fur seals interact to determine why numbers may be declining and help protect this species from the threat of extinction.

Blast off!
