Introducing - Local Staff Member Pro!

Recently, we received a really great suggestion from one of our backers - to share the stories of some of the local people living among lions in our study area.

And so, for our first introduction, we want you to meet our local field assistant, Mathata Tomeletso.  He goes by “Pro” which is short for “Problem;” The English translation of Mathata. Pro is a resident of Eretsha, one of the villages we have been closely collaborating with. He has been working with our PhD student, Eric, since the beginning of the study and is an integral part of the team.

Pro holds an assistant guide’s license and a certificate in professional guiding. His responsibilities include translating between English and the various local languages, overseeing kraal building efforts, conducting questionnaire surveys, tracking the lions, investigating livestock depredation events, and countless of other tasks. He helps us navigate the complex layers of local culture and network of bush roads in the wildlife areas. Working with Pro is fantastic! He has a jovial and calm demeanor accompanied by a hearty laugh and strong work ethic.

Thank you Pro for all that you do to keep the people in your community, their livestock and the local lions safe.

About This Project

CLAWS Conservancy

Lions and people live a tenuous coexistence. When lions kill livestock, villagers retaliate with poison, which indiscriminately removes lions and other wildlife. Through Pride in Our Prides, communities have named local lions and followed their daily habits to learn their individual stories. Through satellite tracking, we also provide early-warnings via text when lions approach the village. So far, this system has successfully protected livestock and lions while halting the use of poison.
