Pride in Our Prides Lion-Proof Kraal Builders

In May of 2015, Pride in OurPrides started building predator-proof kraals woven out of sustainably harvested mophane treebranches, a local hardwood. The way these particular kraals are constructed, ensures they are sturdy enough to keep lions out and livestock in during the night. We hired 3 men from the various villages to workwith Pro and be our Kraal Builders. Gabayo“Kenneth” Samatende, Orapelengg “Raps” Katoima, and Stallen Kaeze make up ourbuilding team and so far, they have constructed 8 kraals in our 5villages. The team is currently working on number 9 at Teekae, the cattle postthat was the center point of our previous blog post “Into the Lion's Den: Diffusing a Lion Hunting Party.”

As a part of the building process, they teach othervillagers and cattle post farmers how to build kraals with this new design. Theyalso act as a knowledge base for their respective villages. Kenneth and Stallenare from Beetsha and Raps is from Eretsha with Pro. The team works greattogether, always full of energy, laughter, and positivity. Raps and Stallenusually keep moral high with jokes and great attitudes, and Kenneth is very thoughtfuland thorough. The many hours they’ve spent building kraals are usuallyaccompanied by the singing of various songs from their churches and localculture. The guys are fantastic and we are lucky to have such a conscientiousand cheerful crew!

About This Project

CLAWS Conservancy

Lions and people live a tenuous coexistence. When lions kill livestock, villagers retaliate with poison, which indiscriminately removes lions and other wildlife. Through Pride in Our Prides, communities have named local lions and followed their daily habits to learn their individual stories. Through satellite tracking, we also provide early-warnings via text when lions approach the village. So far, this system has successfully protected livestock and lions while halting the use of poison.
