Day 1

Today was the first day of the habituation period! We used a bungee cord and a metal clamp to secure the Ipad to the flat surface of the stand, just for the habituation period. After making sure everything was secure, I wheeled the stand back into the holding area where the gorillas were all together. At this point, I just sat behind the stand and allowed the gorillas to come and view the images. I did move the stand once or twice to see if the gorillas were bothered, and they did appear to become a bit more anxious, so I returned to only moving the stand left and right, not up and down. Every single gorilla came to check out the pictures at least once! Even Koga, our impressive male! Two of the gorillas, Sidney and her daughter Amari seemed a little spooked, however they still tool a quick peek. There is definitely potential!! Thanks to Anthony Syracuse for all the great pictures now and for those to come!

About This Project

An animals' "umwelt" is the way in which they perceive the world. With the use of eye-tracking technology, we will present the gorillas with different images to explore the ways in which gorillas see and respond to their world. The overarching goal of this project is to determine visual processing patterns in the gorillas at the Buffalo Zoo and expand our understanding of how they see their world. In other words, this study aims to further our current understanding of the “gorilla umwelt.”
