ISME here we come!

So it has been crazy these past days. As Rachel posted in the previous note, we attended the SDSU metagenomics workshop and finished with information overload, but also with a number of tools to use, including STAMP, which even I could manage. STAMP visualizes metagenomic data, and the past few days we had been busy running our latest sequencing results through the program in preparation for the ISME poster. The samples sequenced during the workshop somehow ran through the MG-RAST pipeline in record time, and playing with the analysis interface was another fun late night activity. The fact that both Rachel and I are teaching has made all this work slightly challenging...but it is really rewarding to see the result shaping up. Even better, we see the possibilities...lots of data mining to do.

Today the poster was finished. I was expecting to have a little bit more time (poster presentation is Monday) but turns out the poster printing places are closed Saturday-Sunday, so it was a bit of early morning rush to get it ready to do. All in all, I am quite pleased with the results, and hope to get feedback in advice during the conference.

About This Project

While many studies have focused on the visible impact of ocean plastic, we know much less about the impact of microbes that choose plastic as their home, forming the so-called plastisphere. The goal of my project is to evaluate the microbial diversity on floating plastic such as retail plastic bags in coastal waters and its potential impact on humans living on coastal areas. The project uses metagenomic next generation sequencing and standard microbiology techniques.
