Packed up and ready to go

All the equipment and supplies has been strategically packed into two Rubbermaid Action Packers plus my backpack full of gloves and isolation gowns (which I am modeling below). For a variety of reasons, both logistical and financial, I was unable to acquire the soil nutrient test kit. But since this analysis was Part II of my project, I can devote my time to gathering more data points for the temperature, pH, and moisture analyses that are the core of this groundwork. I have gloves, goggles, and N-95 masks, and rain boots in my luggage, so we are prepared to collect all those samples.

About This Project

Ninety percent of Malawi does not have access to improved sanitation. 90% of the people also work in agriculture. Small scale farmers comprise more than half of Malawi's population and have limited access to both sanitation and fertilizer. This project aims to assess the ability of composting toilets to provide farmers in northern Malawi with both toilets and a sustainable source of essential soil nutrients.
