Update About Research and Publication

Hello everyone,

I would like to provide a brief update about my research! After receiving full funding on experiment.com, I ordered materials and began running trials throughout the past year. After collecting data, I statistically analyzed my results and discovered some interesting conclusions. In fact, my conclusions were so interesting that my abstract was accepted to Frontiers in Neuroscience, the most cited, international neuroscience research journal. After this, I spent the past summer writing a full paper detailing my methods, results, and conclusions. After a round of blind reviews, my paper was ultimately accepted and has been published in Frontiers in Neuroscience. Here is an overall summary of my key conclusions: This study demonstrates that imbalances in the levels of trace metals copper or zinc triggers further trace metal imbalances in amyloid-beta producing C. elegans while imbalances in copper or zinc levels triggers a return to equilibrium in non-amyloid-beta producing worms. This might indicate that the inability to return to trace metal homeostasis in amyloid-beta-producing C. elegans is part of the cause of higher amyloid-beta aggregations, the primary biomarker of Alzheimer's Disease.

    Awesome job, Ada. I would like to comment with my 25+ years as an engineer. I regret not studying pure science instead. The scientists that I work with are more interesting and collaborative. I don’t know what your college plans are but that’s just one view! You are an amazing scientist already. I’m proud to know you.

About This Project

Alzheimer's Disease, the 6th leading cause of US deaths, is characterized by amyloid-beta(Aβ) plaques and trace metal level imbalances. How this interaction occurs on the molecular level is currently unknown. Protein HSP-16.2 is known to interact individually with Cu,Zn,and Aβ, but their combined interaction has not yet been researched. I hypothesize that HSP-16.2 is involved in the binding of Aβ to Cu and Zn and increases in the levels of one trace metal cause increases in Aβ and other metals.
