Scouting Trap Locations in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Our first week of work in Belarus went surprisingly smoothly, with much thanks to our great support team here in country. We acquired all of our permits, met our new contacts in CEZ, and were able to get out in the zone to start working and re-familiarizing ourselves with the landscape. During the first few days we started on a couple of our projects as well as scouted out locations to set our traps in the coming days. While looking for fresh scat and prints of wolves and raccoon dog, we followed game trails and back roads into the CEZ. There is far more sand here than one might imagine, but this can be helpful when looking for fresh tracks.  And we were able to find quite a few.

About This Project

Radioactive material released by the Chernobyl accident is claimed to have created one of the largest ecological sinks ever observed. Carnivores are keystone species and those living in Chernobyl accumulate high levels of radiation that may cause negative impacts such as reduced immune function and lifespan, yet little is known about this in wildlife. I will investigate parasite and disease rates in wolves and raccoon dogs to quantify radiation effects on health in these populations.

Blast off!
