Creating awareness and excitement about our deep-sea project.

Our collective ambition to conduct locally lead deep-sea research in Seychelles has gathered a lot of attention and buzz in Seychelles. We have been able to partake in media interviews with the local newspaper (Today) and television channel (telesesel).

We have also managed to raise an extra US$ 700 through a private donor that will help us to accomplish our goals. The Danny Faure Foundation (headed by the previous Seychelles President Mr. Danny Faure), generously made the donation after they heard about our endeavour to explore the lesser known parts of our ocean.

Sheena receives additional funding for deep-sea exploration work in Seychelles waters from the Danny Faure Foundation.

We were also invited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment to share the wonders of the deep sea and the need to study it especially in a small island state (or large ocean nation) like Seychelles.

Sheena shares the wonders of the deep sea with staff members of the ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Energy.

About This Project

The deep sea makes up more than 90% of our ocean yet receives little attention due to poor access to technology and expertise especially within Small Island States. This project aims to explore the Seychelles deep-sea (below 200 m) using the newly developed prototype - the Maka Niu - an affordable deep sea camera and sensor. The new understanding generated on deep-sea habitats will support effective ocean management and underpin community engagement with the benefits of the deep sea.
