A Jedi Master and his lionfish

We managed to get in the water today to try to catch more live lionfish. Unfortunately, the wind didn't cooperate so our chosen sites were blown out and sloppy. Instead, we tucked inshore and explored a small patch reef out of the wind. We struck out.

Since that isn't much to brag about, instead I want to show you a video from May, 2013 when I enlisted Chris Flook, a Jedi Master, to catch lionfish for the exhibit at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. This should give you an idea of how we go about catching these fish alive. Flook makes it look pretty darn easy.

About This Project

A team of scientists from Bermuda is gathering data to model the ecological impact lionfish may have on their coral reefs and to develop a targeted removal plan that controls the growth of this population to minimize its damage. This project will focus on the growth and feeding habits of lionfish to complete that model and explore the relationship between lionfish, their prey, and the entire ecosystem.
