Waiting...and a Plan!
Hello kind and patient funders!
I'm sorry to say that I am still waiting for the large ($20k) funding organization to send their donation. However, in the meantime, I have a plan.
I have a pilot set of data in my series of presentiment experiments; these are the experiments in which physiological measures are taken prior to emotional and neutral events, and differences between the measures are consistently found, even though people "should not" be able to predict the future event using normal means.
The experiment is described in detail in this registry document, but here's a brief description. As many of you know, I've got a cell phone app called Choice Compass. The app helps people make decisions based on their heart rhythms. In the presentiment experiment, I'm using the back end of the app -- the algorithm that helps me track beat-to-beat changes in heart activity -- to measure heart rhythms prior to emotional versus neutral events. So far, I've received results that mimic the results I've found in the lab. Specifically, there seems to be a gender difference in which men show a much bigger presentiment effect, and in a different direction, as compared to women.
In this pilot study, the emotional event was a randomly assigned screen announcing that the user of the app had won $2.
The important next steps are to: 1) replicate this result and 2) determine if the result scales with the amount of winnings, which would indicate that this anticipatory physiological activity is mirroring a person's emotional response to the event in time. To do these experiments would cost roughly the amount of funding I have aside from the $20k.
If I do not hear from the funder for the $20k by November 15th, my plan is to ask each of you whether it would be acceptable to convert your donation from the stock-market experiment to these presentiment experiments. If it is not okay, I will return your donation promptly via PayPal.
Thank you again for your patience!
Take care, Julia
