#SciComm through Art

At the North American Ornithological Conference this summer, I had the opportunity to have my work visually depicted as a #biosketch! You can see the woodcock in the foreground with the flight pattern drawn above. Abby McBride (@sketchbiologist),  the artist, did a great job capturing the contrast in habitat choices with range of habitat available from non-industrial on  the left, transition to post-industrial in the middle and urban on the right. You can see it's Liberty State Park and NJ with the Statue of Liberty in the background. And yes, you really can see if from our field site!  Did you catch the cameo made by the Statue of Liberty in our video?

About This Project

I study American Woodcock breeding success in post-industrial habitat to see if human altered habitat can be beneficial for wildlife. To do this, I will be placing radio transmitters on woodcock to monitor them throughout the breeding season. This will allow me to determine their health, survival, and return rates. Studying woodcock can help us better understand other species (Ruffed Grouse, Golden-winged Warbler, etc) that are severely declining due to significant habitat loss.

Blast off!
