Meet the salamander

This is Bolitoglossa pesrubra, the salamander I will be studying in this project. Beautiful right?! This species is one of Costa Rica's many highland salamanders, living between 1800 and 3600 meters above sea level in gorgeous montane cloud forests. This species' populations have been declining in recent decades and I'm hopeful that my work will help promote their conservation into the future. An enormous thank you to all who have donated to this research from me and my salamanders! Please take a moment to share this project with friends and family and spread the word about amphibian conservation!

About This Project

The emergent fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal), poses a significant threat to global salamander conservation. No research to investigate the ecology or prevent the spread of Bsal has been implemented in Central America. I am starting a research study that surveys the Costa Rican salamander community–5th most diverse in the world–for Bsal as well as tests the susceptibility of Costa Rican salamanders to the fungus in order to better inform future conservation planning.

Blast off!
