Field testing of PlanktoScope

Thanks for all the support and donations! The donations will help uncover the wonders of the microbial world (see below).

I arrived at the study site, Bolinao, Northwestern Philippines a week ago. Like any other fieldwork, the first few days were strenuous and rough but I'm starting to get the rhythm. Since then, we were able to arrange three sampling trips as of today.

Using a plankton net to collect and concentrate the plankton we were able to sample four stations across a channel impacted by mariculture and recurring red tide.

Gladly, the machine a.k.a. PlanktoScope worked well (pending optimization of several parameters). Below are some interesting images captured by the PlanktoScope.

Seeing this machine work in the field is something for the books. More to come soon!

About This Project

HAB (harmful algal bloom/red tide) is a public health concern. Here, we are interested in the interaction of algae & viruses which can play a role in a bloom crash. We will utilize a low-cost flow camera (PlanktoScope) to identify the dominant species & a low-cost foldable microscope (FoldScope) for outreach. We envision that the synergy of fundamental science and outreach components will enhance community participation and build capacity to monitor HABs.

Blast off!
