Explanation of different forms of diabetes
There are two major forms of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, in which the body's immune system "attacks" its own insulin-producing cells, resulting in too little insulin to be able to control blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes often starts in childhood and is not caused by increased weight. In type 2 diabetes, cells in the body are resistant to the insulin available. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity, and usually occurs later in life.
Brown fat stimulation can help with sugar control in both forms. In people with type 1 diabetes, improved sugar control may mean needing to inject less insulin, and possibly improving problems with low blood sugars. In type 2, brown fat does not require insulin to take sugar out of the blood and into the cells, and so blood sugar levels can be improved even in the presence of insulin resistance. In addition, improved levels of lipids (fats) in the blood, and increased energy expenditure will improve health and help with weight management.
