From my experience, there seems to be a huge disconnect with the research-community and the non-scientific community. This is one aspect of science that I hope will change in the near future, for the benefit of scientists as well as the general public. As federal grants decreases and becomes more and more competitive, scientists need to explore novel methods of funding their research projects - one example is reaching out to the public in crowdfunding platforms. Part of why I love the idea of crowdsourcing research is that scientists need to engage and draw people in from all backgrounds! My project has been viewed 500 times, and I hope my research project and outcome can open up a dialog on the importance of understanding tick ecology and one-health approaches to tick-borne disease.

Hi Cory, what is a one health approach?

One health is an approach that includes many factors that may contribute to a disease. My project is a great example - there is an interaction between pathogen - tick - wildlife - domestic animals - humans - environment. Realistically, all of these components play a role in the disease dynamics, and it is important to bring scientists from many fields to work across disciplines to look at the whole picture.

About This Project

Researchers estimate that 60% of infection diseases are spread from animals to humans, often by arthropods. Although malaria infections are decreasing in Africa, there has been an increase in acute febrile illness (AFI). AFI includes rapid onset of fever and symptoms such as headache and chills. The South African Mnisi community, which shares 75% surrounded by wildlife reserves, has a high number of AFI cases. We plan to test the hypothesis that AFI in Mnisi is attributed to tick-borne pathogens
