Meet Levi

This week's addition to the seahorse family is Levi. She is a female Hippocampus kuda , one of the smooth seahorse species. We found it her in off a little island called Koh Yao Noi in Phang-nga province on the Andaman (west) Coast. She measured 10.4  cm tall. We found her in a rocky area  in about 3 meters of water, at one of the sites with the worst visibility! Less than 0.5 meters! But still we found 7 seahorses on that dive. This spot was a hotspot on the Andaman Coast : ) We also found another species - H.comes - the tigertail seahorse in the same area.  If you want to check out Koh Yao Noi on Google Maps here are the coordinates:     8° 5'14.68"N ,   98°37'31.63"E.

Thanks to Jen for helping us welcome her and supporting my research : )

About This Project

Last year I spent 3 months searching for seahorses in Thailand, but found only 8 individuals. This was surprising because Thailand is the world's largest exporter of seahorses, sourcing its seahorses from local fisheries. Why were seahorses so hard to find? Was I looking in the wrong places, using the wrong methods, or had so many seahorses been captured in fishing gear, were there none to be found? My future research will seek the answer.
Blast off!
