Research Expedition Funded!

Thanks to all of our backers we have now a fully funded Research Expedition! Later this year we will travel to Portobelo, Panama to investigate how well recreational divers can control lionfish on the reefs! We are very excited about this opportunity to do some meaningful science and so grateful to all of the people who are supporting our efforts with their donations. Thank you!

In other exciting news this week, Bob learned that his dissertation chapter about lionfish in Florida was accepted for publication! We can't share that paper with you just yet, but in the meantime you can check out a shorter version that he presented at the 2013 Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute conference by clicking here. Incidentally, our collaboration started when we met at the 2015 GCFI meeting in Panama where Bob presented a longer version of this paper! Thanks GCFI!

We still have a week left in our campaign, so we are setting up a "Stretch Goal" that will allow us to continue to raise funds to support the Clear This Fish Foundation. The research expedition is just one part of our plan to get the word out about Panama's lionfish problem. Gabriel is our man on the ground in Panama who continues to work at informing coastal communities and stakeholders about the lionfish problem. Just last week Gabriel was a featured guest on a nationally televised cooking show in Panama to talk all about lionfish! (Click here to see some photos of the spot!)

All funds raised from now through the end of the campaign will go towards offsetting the cost of this work by Gabriel and the Clear This Fish Foundation.

Thanks again for your continued support!

If you guys need additional recreational divers to stick it to those lion fish (pun intended), let the community know!

About This Project

Lionfish, an invasive predatory fish from the Indo-Pacific, have been altering the native reef fishes communities on coral reefs throughout the Caribbean for the past decade. In Panama, recreational divers with the Clear This Fish Foundation have been removing lionfish from reefs near Portobelo since 2009.

Our goal is to measure the success of these efforts by scientifically evaluating native fish biomass on reefs cleared of lionfish compared to nearby reefs where the lionfish remain.

Blast off!
