Ask Me Anything!

Hi everyone.

As I'm in the office these days, plugging along, I don't have much to share in the way of videos or photos or exciting stories. Instead, so I can hopefully keep you all engaged, I thought we'd try one of these AMA's I hear about online. That's where I open the floor to you all and let you Ask Me Anything about my research, marine ecology, or lionfish in general. So, any questions?

The only news I've got to share is that the captive fish are doing pretty well. All except one that is. Last week, a lionfish decided to go for a walk. It apparently jumped out of the tank, despite the two layers of shade cloth we have covering each. To prevent this happening again, the Fisheries wardens have put more permanent mesh covers on the tanks so the rest should be safe and secure.

Now, before signing off, I will share one picture. A friend of mine, a chef in Bermuda, found this poor juvenile trumpetfish in the throat of a lionfish he was preparing. Wild.

Ok. Ask me anything.

Hi Cindy! Thanks for asking! Yes, I thoroughly enjoy eating lionfish. They are delicious and a very healthy alternative to other species that are overfished.

About This Project

A team of scientists from Bermuda is gathering data to model the ecological impact lionfish may have on their coral reefs and to develop a targeted removal plan that controls the growth of this population to minimize its damage. This project will focus on the growth and feeding habits of lionfish to complete that model and explore the relationship between lionfish, their prey, and the entire ecosystem.
Blast off!
